Preparations
I've been thinking a lot lately about what it's going to be like to spend two or three months in bed. I'm sure most of my time will be spent sleeping and taking pain pills. In the time that I am able to do more and before I am ok'd to start telecommuting to work, I think I'll probably be reading and watching a lot of movies.
I am an avid reader. I read at least one book a month as it is now and see a movie maybe once every week or two, and I currently work at least five days a week. I can't imagine how many more I'll be reading or watching if I'm just in bed all day for days on end. But I don't want to just watch a bunch of crap or whatever is coming on TV, and I don't want to re-read (again) all my books.
If you were on a desert island...
So here's the dealio--I want to know the books and movies that you would recommend for me to read/watch.
Give them to me in the comments. Here's the rules:
- First come, first served --you cannot give the same answer as anyone else in the comments. Each answer has to be new, so I get a little variety.
- You can't choose one the books or movies that are already on my favorite list. Favorite books: To Kill a Mockingbird, Harry Potter (all of 'em), A Tale of Two Cities, Shopgirl, The Red Tent, The DaVinci Code, Leaves of Grass. Favorite movies: Juno, Anchorman, Rushmore, Amelie, Breakfast at Tiffany's.
- You can only pick ONE book and ONE movie. UPDATED: LIST AS MANY AS YOU WANT (Becky intrigued me on this one!)
Thank you for playing. I look forward to your answers!

Book: The Way of the Peaceful Warrior
Movie: Princess Bride
Let me know when I can list more than one book and I'll give you a whole slew of yoga-type books. :)

Ooooohhhhh. That sounds too good, Becky. I'm changing the rules--list as MANY books/movies as you want!
Please let me know what you suggest!

OK, you asked for it. I highly recommend almost all of the books I had assigned to me for required reading during my various yoga teacher training classes. Here are my favorites:
How Yoga Works, by Geshe Michael Roach and Christi McNally
Your Body Speaks Your Mind, by Deb Shapiro
Growing the Positive Mind, by Dr. William K. Larkin
Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle
A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle
And a movie for good measure: What Happens in Vegas. "You know why!" (that will make total sense and make you laugh your butt off after you watch the movie)

Book: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon
Movie: Elf--not a classic, but one of my favorites :)
Book: Game of Shadows.
This is an entertaining and educational account of the steroid era in major league baseball! what? don't look at me like that!
TV Series: 6 Feet Under.
Greatness, just ask Matt! If you haven't already seen this it could provide hours and hours of entertainment... 5 seasons worth!
Movie: Dirty Pretty Things. Starring Audrey Tautou (from Amelie).
Look at me, your slacker sister is posting. Yay.
Ok, you know how much I love Harry Potter (I am currently looking into changing my kids names to Harry and Hermione), and you've already read them all. I hope to get the fairy tale book this Christmas, and if I do, I'll let you borrow it. Or if you get it, you can let me. Other than that, I really loved The Ruins. Harlen Coben wrote some good books too. Self help books can really make you feel better when you're down.
I'm not into movies like I used to be, but my some of my faves are Pulp Fiction; Titanic; Anchorman - actually anything with Will Ferrell, but Anchorman rules all; Borat; Kill Bill 1&2.
There have been some tv series that I have loved too - Sopranos, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, The Office (your niece owns the complete set).
And I find that its always entertaining to watch the baby videos of little Harry and Hermione - I'll be happy to let you borrow them.
love ya
Becky, you are right on with your movie choices...I love both of those! I think I'll start with the Peaceful Warrior book. I love the title!
Kim, I think my mother has that book, so I'll just borrow hers. I think we'll probably watch Elf over the holiday, which I love.
B...Dear, sweet B. You know I will never touch that baseball book. I may try 6feet, but it looks boring to me. Matt does seem to love it and now with your and Misty’s recommendation, I may try it.
I saw Dirty, Pretty Things in the theater and fell asleep. That doesn't mean its not a good movie, but just that I easily fall asleep to most movies. I'll try it again. I love Tautou, so that's a plus.
Misty, I also asked for the Harry Potter fairy tale book for Christmas! And I am fully supportive of changing ER's names to Harry and Hermione. I didn't think it was possible, but I may love them more if that happens!
I heard The Ruins is really good & scary, so I'll put that on the book list. The movie was more funny than scary, though. It looked like a giant marijuana plant was attacking them.
I would love to borrow little Harry & Hermione’s baby videos, especially the “happy hol-i-day!” one.
Thanks guys! xoxo
OOh, I have another one.
The TV series Firefly, and the follow-up movie Serenity. Watch the series in order, and then watch the movie. Total greatness. You'll be hooked for sure!
Becky
Book: The Kite Runner
Movie/TV: Friday, The L Word
Quit watching The L Word so you can save them while you recover
You can finally watch SPIRITED AWAY!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245429/
And maybe read The Road by Cormac McCarthy. That's the next book I plan on reading!
LOVE
Becky, Firefly sounds so good! I think I will rent those. I hear they're addicting.
Kels, a girl at work told me about The Kite Runner. It sounds good. Also, I haven't watched anymore than a couple of episodes of season 3 of the L Word, so I'll save the rest.
Matt, that book has always looked good. I'll read it after you do. It will be a nice change from the way we usually do it with me reading a book and then forcing you to read it. :) I'll watch Spirited Away if you come over and watch it with me.
xoxo
Books:
Eat Pray Love by Liz Gilbert
Kiss My Tiara by Susan Gilman
An Encyclopedia of An Ordinary Life by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
Movies:
Love Actually
Playing By Heart
Wall-E
'80s classics - Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Dirty Dancing
View from the Top (silly but funny/girl-power flick)
TV Series - Lost on DVD (very addicting)
Megan, you and I are more alike than I realized (and not with just the obvious first name)! I love, love Eat, Pray, Love and The Lovely Bones.
I'll have to check out the others. I've never read anything by Hawking, so that sounds intriguing.
I am already addicted to lost, but I've only seen through season three. I will definitely need to pick that back up.
All great choices! Thank you for putting time and thought into this!!
